This Week’s Film: Apocalypse Now
Cuisine: Vietnamese

With its strong French-colonial influences, Vietnam is known for its excellent French-style baguettes. In Vietnamese they’re called banh mi, and the baguettes are used to make a variety of meat and vegetable sandwiches, also simply called banh mi. This version is made with spicy vegetable slaw and savory pork meatballs.

I’ve never seen meat balls in a Banh Mi before, but it looks delicious.

According to my research, Banh Mi can be filled with a variety of meats, vegetable toppings, and condiments. I think that the ground pork sometimes comes in the form of sausages, so the meatballs also make sense. They are seasoned with distinctively Vietnamese spices, and instead of adding the condiments and shredded vegetables separately, I turned them into a spicy slaw. Definitely a deviation from tradition, but so tasty.
