This week, it’s time for my favorite annual project. Every year around this time, I receive preview copies of all the Asian films that have been entered in the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. The Asian entries usually total a dozen or so, however, this year I only received DVDs for six of them, as about half of the Asian filmmakers have requested that the media view their films at the festival screening. Unfortunately San Jose is a six hour round trip from where I live, and the festival takes place over the course of two weeks, so I will be unable to attend the various screenings of those films that were unavailable to me on DVD.
Of the films that were available, I will be reviewing Cooking History, Complaints Choir, The Desert of Forbidden Art, Raspberry Magic, The Robbers, and Semshook. Join me throughout the week as I feature a synopsis of each film, and at the end of the week, my Cinequest Film Reviews will be posted on ThingsAsian.com.

Hi Celeste,
Good to hear that you will be reviewing our film The Desert of Forbidden Art. I am one of the directors.
We are very excited to come to Cinequest, after a premiere at Santa Barbara with 2 sold out screenings and 3rd screening added for popular demand. If you don’t have the DVD let us know, meanwhile, check out our downloadable presskit at http://www.desertofforbiddenart.com/about
Cheers,

Tchavdar,
My son Will and I watched your film over the weekend and LOVED it! I have a degree in art, and was so impressed by the compositions and especially the COLORS in the collection. And your documentary is fascinating and so well crafted. Needless to say I will be giving The Desert of Forbidden Art a glowing review! Thanks so much for taking the time to say hello.
Dear Celeste,
I am the screenwriter of “Semshook”, one of the films you have been asked to review. The screening at Cinequest is our World Premier and we would have been really happy if you could have made it there, but never mind! Shall eagerly await your thoughts on the film. Hope and pray that you like it!
Best wishes,
Sudip Sharma
Sudip,
Thanks so much for taking the time to write. It’s unfortunate that I live so far from San Jose, as I would love to meet you and see your world premier. Congratulations! Having read the synopsis, I have no doubt that Semshook is excellent, and I look forward to watching it on DVD later this week. Best of success at Cinequest!
